Irradiation of &methyl spiro [2.5] oct-7-en-4-one through its singlet excited state resulted in the formation of 4-methyl spirO [2.5] oct-4-en -6-one. We have used the cyclopropyl moiety in the molecule as a probe to study the operating mechanism in the photochemistry of ?, ?-unsaturated compounds. The results showed that this photoisomerization probably occurs through a concerted process.

In the title compound, C(16)H(13)NO(2), the quinoline system is approximately planar with a maximum deviation from the least-squares plane of 0.059 (1) Å for the N atom. The phenyl ring is rotated by 62.16 (4)° with respect to the plane of the quinoline system. In the crystal, O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds link mol-ecules into infinite chains running along the b-axis direction.

In the title compound, C(20)H(20)N(4)O(2), the piperidine ring adopts a distorted boat conformation. The two phenyl rings form dihedral angles of 82.87 (1) and 84.40 (1)° with respect to the piperidine ring. The crystal packing is stabilized by inter-molecular C-H⋯O and C-H⋯N inter-actions.
